The following six eye disease are
responsible for most blindness in humans
Cataract
is the major single cause of blindness worldwide, and is more prevalent in developing
countries. It is basically a clouding or opacity forming in the lens of the eye. The lens of the
eye
allows you to focus on near or far objects, like the lens of a camera. See the diagram of the human eye, on the right.
AMD
, Glaucoma,
Diabetic
Retinopathy and Retinitis
Pigmentosa affect the retina.
Retinitis
Pigmentosa destroys the photoreceptor cells of the retina;
the cells
that intitiate vision by detecting the light entering the eye. Diabetic
Retinopathy and AMD
damage vast patches of retina.
Glaucoma
destroys the nerve cells that connect the photoreceptor cells to the
brain.
