The following six eye disease are responsible for most blindness in humans

Cataract is the major single cause of blindness worldwide,  and is more prevalent in developing countries. It is basically
a clouding or opacity forming in the lens of the eye. The lens of the eye allows you to focus on near or far objects, like the lens of a camera. See the diagram  of the human eye, on the right.

AMD , Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinitis Pigmentosa affect the retina.

Retinitis Pigmentosa destroys the photoreceptor cells of the retina; the cells that intitiate vision by detecting the light entering the eye. Diabetic Retinopathy  and AMD damage vast patches of retina.

Glaucoma  destroys the nerve cells that connect the photoreceptor cells to the brain.
